Chimney Swift Peeps

First heard the chicks peep on July 1st. The peeps are getting louder each day. They should fledge the chimney ~August 1st.

The swifts are nesting!

Looked down the chimney this afternoon when installing bird spikes on the roof (to keep the raccoons out) and saw something like this:

It was a surprise because they were late in arriving and we did not hear much out of them. Incubation usually lasts about 19 days so we should here some little peeps by June 29 or earlier!

Chimney Swifts

Yesterday was International Migratory Bird Day.

Rua working the Chimney Watch Booth:

It was also the day our chimney hosted swifts again! Tonight we will count them as they go to roost to see how many we have.

Chimney Swifts

We have had swifts in the neighborhood since last week, but no swifts in our chimney yet. We did scare off a raccoon from the chimney last night (the third one this year!).

The swifts have left the chimney

Last heard them 2 nights ago. They must have flocked up with other swifts and roosting elsewhere.

Swift Nest Fail

The chimney swift nestlings were most likely predated on 6/28. The day before that was the last day we heard any peeps. Raccoon? Squirrel?

Adults are still roosting in the chimney every night.

Swifts

Counted the swifts entering the chimney last night. Three, we have 3 swifts.

In other bird news:

The chickadees fledged.

Nuthatch is still on eggs.

Saw/heard some migrants in the greenway (redstart, thrush, ovenbird)

House wrens have left but Great Crested Flycatchers are still around.

Saw starlings dispersing (?) through the neighborhood and backyard.

Hummers have been visiting the yard but not the feeder yet.

Swifts in the chimney!

We had 1 or possibly 2 swifts roost in the chimney last night. They may be the family from last year, or could be migrants passing through.

The Swifts Are Here!

Heard a chimney swift today, first of the season. How long until our family arrives?
